Abstract
Chalk is a critically important aquifer in Southern England and karst features can be the source of ‘unrestricted’ pathways to the groundwater reservoir leading to possible groundwater contamination. Natural solution creates sinkholes and associated depressions on the surface while anthropogenic activity creates surface depressions associated with dene holes, bell pits and old surface extraction pits. This study provides a methodology for mapping and classification of these features using high resolution digital elevation models, supported with geophysics. This provides an insight into lithological and macro-structural controls. New LiDAR and Sentinel SAR high resolution data sets are used with recently developed geophysical techniques to support ground model development.
