The challenge of infrastructure development above shallow mine workings, or areas prone to the formation of solution features in Chalk and Limestone areas, is not new. Previously avoidance of these potentially high risk areas was preferred, however continual demand for developable land and infrastructure corridors means such sites are increasingly being targeted for development. This paper highlights the use of high strength/low strain geosynthetic reinforcement being incorporated to provide support to infrastructure above existing or potential ground voids. Whilst being regarded as a relatively new approach this paper will highlight the recent history of this technique through case studies, as well as looking at the now common practice of incorporating a warning layer into the system to provide early detection of any collapse mechanisms. Recent advances and areas of research in this field will also be discussed.
