Medium-scale physical model experiments have been conducted to measure wave-induced forces on a submerged water intake structure located in the surf zone. The experimental program included tests with a broad range of regular and irregular wave conditions at three different water levels. Velocities were measured in the vicinity of the structure and used together with force data obtained in tests with regular waves to determine drag and inertia force coefficients appropriate for various wave conditions. The Morison equation was used to successfully predict the forcing on the structure due to irregular waves. Peak forcing (95th percentile force) on the structure was underestimated by an average of approximately 19% for all irregular wave test cases.
