First page of Considering Digital Technology and Innovative Learning Spaces as “Structures for Serving” at Hispanic Serving Institutions

Digital technology is an integral part of learning for college students. Once described as a campus trend with the possibility of becoming a short-term fad in the early-2000s (Galuszka, 2005), high-tech mobile devices are now ubiquitous on today’s college campuses. Students are no longer anchored to desktop computers for their academic work, and instead, are using mobile technology for learning. Additionally, learning has moved beyond traditional brick-and-mortar classroom settings. Learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle) are used on many campuses to provide lesson materials and opportunities for learning online. Students are also transforming how we view traditional learning spaces on campus. Learning occurs in spaces where mobility and collaboration are common, and digital technology is readily accessible. Overall, today’s generation of students are transforming how learning occurs within higher education by merging digital technology and innovative learning environments.
