Chapter 2: John Holland: An Enduring Legacy

John Holland is perhaps one of the most recognized theorists in the field of career development and choice. In his own way, he has tried to answer a rather simple question “How does an individual find, choose, and maintain a career?” As Miller (1998) notes and a cursory review of the literature (Gottfredson, 1999; Herr, 1997; Herr & Cramer, 1996; Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2002; Osipow & Fitzgerald, 1996; Sharf, 2002; Zunker, 2002) confirms, Holland’s theory has survived nearly 30 years of empirical scrutiny and remains one of the premier theories in the vocational literature. There is hardly a practicing counselor today who has not encountered his work, and in some way chooses to incorporate aspects of his approach into their own practice. In recognition of his enduring legacy this article will describe John Holland’s theory, constructs, and practical applications as they relate to career development. A final section will discuss future applications of his work.
