This chapter investigates the historical forces that have given rise to the neoliberal worldview that currently dominates the political and economic agenda of the post-industrial West. The position is advanced herein that institutionalized education can operate outside of its historical function as a mechanism for the cross-generational reproduction of hegemonic sociocultural formulae through the provision of learning venues and experiences that serve to question and destabilize a priori assumptions upon which the marginalization of potentially useful cultural elements is based.
