The Examining Mathematics Coaching (EMC) Project1 is a research study that examined the effects of variations in a coach’s knowledge for coaching on a diverse population of elementary grades teachers. We investigated coaches’ mathematics knowledge and coaching knowledge and the effects of those on teachers’ mathematics knowledge, classroom practice, and attitudes. The study used both an experimental and nonexperimental phase, and it included qualitative data collection and analysis where appropriate. At the heart of our study were practical questions:
We sought to answer these questions empirically. This chapter will outline the study, discuss its results, and place our study in the context of ongoing research in this area.
