Abstract
It is suggested that a cognitive perspective can provide important insights into the nature and occurrence of opportunity recognition, a key aspect of the entrepreneurial process. Several perceptual and cognitive factors that may play a role in opportunity recognition are described (e.g., pattern identification, signal detection theory, regulatory focus theory), and their implications for future research addressing both theoretical and practical issues concerning opportunity recognition are examined.
