Teacher candidates grade and provide feedback on a set of papers that secondary students created in response to an authentic assessment task and then analyze the processes and principles of grading and providing effective feedback to K–12 students.
Most teachers say that grading and providing feedback are among their least favorite part of the job, yet most recognize it is one of the central tasks of teaching. This common practice—evaluating and offering feedback on student work—demands an understanding of content, students, learning progressions, feedback mechanisms, and evaluative criteria. Typically, teacher candidates learn how to evaluate and comment on student work while on the job, rather than in their professional training.
