Materials for early childhood teachers often stereotype Latino families as deficient, comparing them unfavorably to the normative homes of White, English-speaking, middle class families. This article highlights the expertise, strengths, and agency of two Latino families. Grounded in a critical sociocultural perspective, the article analyzes the practices and beliefs of the parents, identifying them as warm demanders who expected their children to work hard and achieve while being supportive, creating active learning experiences, and sharing motivating consejos. Educators are urged to get to know Latino parents, engage in critical self-reflection, and question dictates about what is appropriate.
