First page of Learning From Elementary School Mathematics Research:
Changes in the Beliefs and Practices of Secondary School Teachers

For the past several years we have played a dual role in the field of mathematics education. Each morning Scott teaches algebra, precalculus, and Advanced Placement calculus classes at a local high school. At the same time, Sharon teaches prealgebra and algebra in a feeder junior high. In the afternoons, we work as mathematics specialists in our school district. Our dual assignments give us two perspectives on mathematics education reform: one from the position of training and supporting teachers as they make the transition from traditional ways of teaching mathematics toward developing new pedagogical strategies, and one from the position of teachers in the trenches trying to make sense of the new pedagogy for ourselves.
