This chapter explores the experiences of college and university student affairs administrators who have worked to improve campus policies and practices for LGBTQ students in the Deep South by creating counternarratives and counterspaces in higher education. In this chapter, we offer a synthesis of our research from a qualitative, narrative study where student affairs administrators who identified as activists and advocates for LGBTQ students and campus issues were interviewed to learn more about their experiences advocating for change on campus in the context of the Deep South. We offer implications for practice and research for university faculty, administrators, and professional staff working to effect change for LGBTQ communities in higher education.
