In this book we set out to explore how access and equity play a role in quality experiences for youth, and, in particular, how the field has yet to meet the needs of the most underserved communities. Each chapter, and the issues raised—funding, outreach, relationships between institutions—were viewed with an access and equity lens. Within these broad topics, the book raises equity and access challenges as well as proposes solutions from the perspective of practitioners.
While many of the strategies identified in the book were designed and implemented with specific programs and youth in mind, there are many which are cross-cutting and can easily be adopted and adapted by other agencies and programs. For example, “close touch” and targeted outreach (see Loeper’s chapter) are simple and effective strategies that help to ensure that parents and families become engaged and that an organization remains aligned to its mission. Becoming cognizant that many families and youth have experienced trauma can help agencies tailor specific types of professional development for staff (see chapters by Loeper and McGee). Learning how to create and sustain a city-wide network can be applied to any municipality (see chapter by Anthony). Recognizing the benefits and drawbacks of specialized versus generalized programs designed to serve youth with disabilities, and ways to be more inclusive can be a valuable exercise in any agency (see chapter by Stolz). We hope that the strategies presented in this book can be implemented at other youth organizations to reduce inequity and improve the experiences of youth at these programs and ultimately their life trajectories.
