Chapter 10: Buber’s Spiritual Classroom

This chapter is both a criticism of our schools and a modest attempt to articulate a vision of a spiritual classroom. I will address a malady that is being produced upon unwary students and respond to a vision of education that motivates students not by fear or tacit rewards, but when they are energized by images of teaching and learning that are more communal than competitive, more personal than objective and more about serving than getting. My criticism of our schools is but a modest attempt to move beyond the deforming rhetoric and lay claim to a moral and spiritual formation as a way to ground our educational orientation.
