Chapter 11: Automatic Item Generation with Machine Learning Techniques: A Pathway to Intelligent Assessments

The conventional assessments on the Internet (AoI) face the challenges of maintaining the desired level of quality and security from increasing demands of online applications, which is called the AoI trilemma. Although automatic item generation (AIG) has been proposed to address these issues, it is not fully “automated” or “intelligent” yet to provide a variety of high-quality assessment services on a large scale in the AoI environment. In this manuscript, I firstly review several important new technological infrastructures (e.g., digital assessment platforms and machine learning techniques) for AIG in the AoI environments. Then, I propose few strategies of using machine learning techniques to maximally utilize AIG for intelligent assessment services.
