First page of Using Educational Criticism and Connoisseurship for Qualitative Research
By P. Bruce Uhrmacher, Christy McConnell Moroye, and David J. Flinders

Using Educational Criticism and Connoisseurship for Qualitative Research provides a quick yet in-depth review of Elliot Eisner’s (1976) educational connoisseurship and criticism with practical considerations for applications in qualitative research projects. Educational connoisseurship and criticism is a form of qualitative inquiry situated as a subset of empirical, interpretive inquiry like ethnographic or case study research (p. 3). Initially utilized in the arts, educational criticism has been adopted as a qualitative research framework throughout the education realm. My reasons for reading the book had less to do with uncovering a research methodology and more with improving my understanding of the concepts of connoisseurship and criticism for use in my professional work as a teacher educator and as a high school STEM instructor. Whether a novice or experienced educator, the reader finds much to ponder in this book.
