The Island of Mauritius is a diminutive volcanic island in the Indian Ocean at the crossroads of Africa and Asia. This location is geopolitically significant as it has been the point of convergence of many seafaring nations, in particular the Portuguese, Dutch, French, and British. Its vulnerability to both the deleterious effects of global climatic changes and man-made political, cultural, and economic globalization forces is overwhelmingly evident. Mauritius remains, however, a unique example in its tradition of a peaceful multicultural society with a strong coexistence tradition. It is said that it is the kindness of Buddha, the nonviolence of Gandhi, and the mutual tolerance among the ethnic groups that capture the essence of Mauritian tradition and facilitate its peaceful nature.
