In this chapter we explore the design of Maps & More,1 a technology-rich pedagogical environment intended to facilitate the exploration of maps and social science data as socially constructed narratives that need to be actively read. The goal of the Maps & More project was to develop a Webbased series of curricular modules for teachers, student teachers, and students that facilitate a critical engagement with maps, charts, and graphs across the curricula of middle school. Maps & More invites users to think about, with, and through a variety of maps and social science data presentation formats to consider the political, economic, and social implications of these formats to name, construct, and depict our geographic and social imagination.
