“Where do you put your bookmark, Mom, where you’ve already read or where you will start reading?” This was one of many questions proposed by my daughter, Julianne, a first grader who has fallen in love with the printed word this year and writes in her journals every night. Yes, I said journals. She has possession of three. One is her personal that I’m not allowed to read and another is laid on my nightstand when she is finished. It is passed back and forth, growing in maturity as fast as her vocabulary. Her third one is for drawings of her day. My favorite is the one we share between the two of us. When I respond, I use several of her misspelled words. She then reads it back to me before she writes back.
