The P–12 educational landscape of the 21st century currently faces several significant challenges, including uncertainty with how to address the growing student diversity in schools. This uncertainty suggests that there is need to examine the experiences of principals more deeply. There is a need to specifically explore more deeply their motivations for principalship. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to center race by exploring Black principals’ experiences and their motivations to principalship.
