A test of this kind was first given in 1976, then in 1977, and now for the third time in 1979.
The test in 1976 was a result of one of our regular departmental discussions on the deficiencies in the mathematical backgrounds possessed by incoming freshmen. This first test was devised by Dr. R. V. Moody, assisted by David Houston, an Honors student in mathematics. The test in 1976 contained 37 questions. The results were poor. It was suggested that the test was too long and some of the questions were too difficult.
Therefore in 1977 a shorter test was given of 20 questions. The results were slightly better but not at all good. I reported on these briefly at SCIEMATICS ‘77 in Regina.
