There are three basic ways to view mathematics:
Each of these.. .is of significance. The first aspect is important for all. The second is essential to the scientist, the engineer—generally to those who make their living through professions that use mathematics as a tool. The third aspect is of concern to the professional mathematician. He sees in it a fascination and beauty that usually escapes the mathematically untrained mind.
There are too many cases...where pupils leave our schools without the necessary skills to make them employable and to allow them to apply mathematics to help them solve the problems of daily life.
