Chapter 6: A Continuing Success: Computer-Assisted Instruction

In their quest for new methods of improving the educational process, educators have tried many new techniques and technologies. One of the new technologies being used experimentally at a number of educational institutions is computer-assisted instruction (CAI). Considering the fact that the first published article describing CAI appeared only fifteen years ago (Rath, Anderson and Brainerd, 1959), research into and application of CAI has progressed quite rapidly. Now, the difficulty CAI authors face is simply that of keeping abreast of the current literature in the field.

Even though the obstacles have been formidable, the field of CAI has expanded rapidly. A major reason for this success is the potential for individualizing instruction. This is primarily accomplished by permitting each student to progress through learner-centered CAI materials at one’s rate in one’s own learning style.
