The spark for this project was ignited by the following sentence quoted from the April, 1981 issue of Discover magazine: “The most recent study deals with the long-established fact that skill in mathematics is far more common among men than women” (Weintraub, 1981, p. 15).
The subject of this paper, “Sex-related Differences in Mathematics Achievement at the Division IV Level,” is organized in the following way. A synopsis of the results of five recent surveys of mathematics achievement, which focused on sex-related differences, is reported. Then follows a discussion of some of the theories, which have been made to explain the differences in mathematics achievement by men and women.
