First page of Introduction to Case Study 5

Narrative research is the process of gathering and exploring the stories people tell about their experiences in order to provide interpretation. This study about the cross-cultural features of coming-out experiences displays a narrative approach using the participants’ experiences. The author properly contextualized these coming-out stories with in-depth accounts instead of serving as resources for developing sexuality typologies. Narrative research also sheds light on how narrators negotiate sexual practices concerning the self, the interviewer, and sociocultural norms. This study emphasizes how these immigrants’ sexualities are repositioned through narration inside the U.S. context for legitimacy by utilizing sociolinguistic interviews as the technique and narrative positioning as the analytical tool. Some theoretical and methodological reflection strategies are described in the section on qualitative research for marginalized groups and can easily be replicated for similar research populations.
