In many respects, the revised set of IBSTPI instructor competencies presented in this book is long overdue. With close to a 20-year gap between these 2021 competencies and the last ones published in 2004, the enterprise of teaching and learning has advanced significantly due to advances in learning sciences, evidence-based pedagogy, emerging technologies, and instructional delivery modalities, but it also remains grounded in well-established instructional principles. The empirical findings from our study conducted to rate the importance of IBSTPI-identified instructor competencies illustrates that many fundamentals of good instruction are holding true, but at the same time, instructors are adapting and enhancing instruction through the use of new understandings on how to instruct using current best practices and how, when appropriate, to effectively integrate digital tools and resources into teaching and learning.
