As one seeks meaning in the complex layers of the classroom, one simultaneously discovers the most personal and authentic elements of the artist(s) working therein (i.e., students and teachers). Although good teaching is the result of the unique and skillful combination of a variety of prior experiences, rich materials, engaging methods, and masterful techniques, the truest artistry always comes from a place that is so deep within us that its shape is almost unknowable. Elliot Eisner’s (2002) book, The Arts and the Creation of the Mind, explores this symbiosis within the context of art and education. I invite you to examine the manner in which his work and his life have reciprocally influenced one another as you eavesdrop on an interview conducted by e-mail about his most recent book.
