In the dissertation, Devising the Map: The Journey towards Arts and Culture Education in the Foundation Phase, I report on qualitative research which aimed to explore the current perceptions towards arts and culture of a sample of South African (SA) primary school (foundation phase) teachers. The research investigated what an arts and culture inservice teacher curriculum entails for SA teachers.

Sally Clarke’s (1998) report Cultural and Arts Education Collective Research Report: Arts and Culture Provision in Primary Schools described the lack of arts in primary schools and expressed concern that teachers do not associate the arts with culture, but rather with heritage. This observation was the impetus for this research.
