Chapter 32: Transitioning into Civilian Careers (TICC) from the Military: A New Model

Currently, there are 1.3 million active members in all branches of the United States military (Department of Defense, 2016). Regardless of their role, each military member who transitions back into civilian life will require transitional services, particularly for reentry into a civilian career. Despite the sheer volume of enlisted servicemen and women, there is a lack of research on the career development needs of transitioning veterans. Only recently have researchers begun to examine the needs and difficulties veterans face as they transition from military to civilian careers (Rausch, 2014). While there has been substantial research on varying techniques and career counseling theories appropriate for transitioning veterans, a structured intervention model that extends throughout the transition period for veterans remains lacking.
