Socioeconomic Career Theory factors into socioeconomic conditions and the economy when providing career counseling to clients. The theory will be discussed and the components of the theory will be explained. The Wisconsin Model is a specific model that counselors may use that adheres to the Socioeconomic Career Theory practices. In addition, The Improved Career Decision Making will also be discussed. This calls for the expanded role of career counselors.
Also important is an understanding of how the unemployment benefits work and how the welfare system works. Many people out of work may experience one or both of these and it is important for career counselors to have an understanding of them to comprehensively address their client’s needs. In addition, budget planning will be included and discussed, which is important for career counselors to address with their clients. Another topic point of discussion is how a client’s culture is important to take into consideration in a socioeconomic career theory context. Lastly, two case studies will be presented and the theory will be applied with a comprehensive approach to counseling the client towards a new career.
