Chapter 4: “All I Got is You”: Exploring the Intersectionality of Low-Income Black Males’ Educational Challenges at HBCUS

In 2006, Michael Cuyjet produced an edited volume on African American Men in College that provided a compelling examination of the status of Black males in higher education and discussed factors critical to their success. While only one chapter in Cuyjet’s (2006) book focused on historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), it was timely and relevant. The chapter to which we are referring was written by Kimbrough and Harper (2006) and it indicated that many researchers had become so focused on investigating the experiences of Black male collegians at predominantly White institutions (PWIs) that they neglected to provide insight into the experiences of Black males at HBCUs.
