I doubt that Meredith, then about 11 years old, remembers the event that precipitated her remark. I certainly don’t. But she was right: in our discussion, I was behind the times. Maybe the incident had to do with cell phone usage ... her apparent “in touch-ness” with friends throughout the entire 24-hour day. And my reservation of my cell phone usage to an “emergency” that might develop on my commutes between my home in Georgetown and my former university office.... Might but never did. During the past decade, I surely have fallen ever further out of contemporary “with-it-ness” by my continued use, of all unfashionable things, letters to friends and associates. Moreover, I am adrift in the universe of texting and tweets.
