First page of An Academic Travel Guide

Eve R. Bernstein

Having come from a career in teaching martial arts, I became a new professor in the field of physical education. To frame this chapter I would like to discuss my first year experience by using a text on martial arts called the Book of Five Rings, by Miyamoto Musashi (1974, 2002), which cites five elements. These five elements instruct successful practice not only in the martial arts but also in everyday life. Although the Book of Five Rings applies as a guide for fighting and swordsmanship, many of the principles can be used to guide ones’ practice outside of the martial arts. The elements are listed below, and a description of how they have guided my first year as a professor follows.
