I walked into Mr. Tucker’s office before the start of first period. The principal greeted me with a smile. He was a former social studies teacher at the school, in his mid-thirties, just a few years older than me. Mr. Tucker had been an energetic and passionate classroom teacher.

“Good morning Mr. Tucker. I want to run an idea past you. I’d like to start a new social studies elective that focuses on discussing controversial political issues. A class that really prepares students for their role as citizens.” I said.

“Controversial political issues.” Mr. Tucker repeated, pausing in thought for a moment, “Sounds like fun! Let’s talk to Mrs. Phillips (the school counselor) and see about making room in next year’s schedule for it.”
