This research examined four locations along the principal pipeline in Minnesota, including (a) recruitment and selection, (b) university preparation, (c) licensing and certification, and (d) continuing professional development. The research was based on interviews with Minnesota administrators and stakeholders followed by literature review to identify key issues and best practices related to each location across the career continuum of school principals. An overall framework for understanding the principals’ workplace is introduced to explain the range of insights referenced in interviews and literature reviews. Policy themes and specific recommendations for schools and districts, colleges and universities, professional associations and organizations, and state agencies are presented.
