Preamble 13: “Hells”

Understand “meditation” as it is explained in Dharmamitra’s Clear Words Commentary (Prasphuta-pada):

This re-cited passage needs re-reading. It needs to be applied more broadly than I first realized. Not meditating upon and studying the object of meditation, but instead falling prey to the rushing of the world also is letting the mind take on the state or condition of the object of a lack of meditation. “The mind takes on the state or condition of the object” and if the object has become fragmented, sequenced, standardized, reified, entrenched, exhausting, bent on obedient assembly without thought or care, then I become fragmented, sequenced, standardized, and exhaustedly bent on such obedience and thoughtlessness.
