Knowledge about the changing roles for fathers around the world is highlighted in the educational, demographic, sociological, and psychological literature. However, much of this research has been conducted within the context of the United States and other economically developed countries. Therefore, the ideas related to fatherhood are described from this body of research. This research has limited the conceptual framework of fatherhood. Interdisciplinary knowledge drawing on the disciplines of psychology, sociology, and anthropology, and situated cross-cultural research can provide a better way to understand the phenomenon of fatherhood as it is enacted in different settings around the world, across generations, and in diverse multicultural contexts.
