In the same way as many other women, my road to starting a tenure-track position was uneven. I received my Ph.D. in educational linguistics in the summer of 2000 from the University of Pennsylvania after having worked long-distance since 1997, analyzing my data and writing the manuscript in Cincinnati, Ohio, where I had moved to be with my partner. Next, I moved with my partner who had been offered an academic position at the University of Washington in Seattle in the fall of 2000. I then started a temporary position in the College of Education in 2001 and only started a tenure-track position in 2004 after they opened up a national search.
