The ideology of schools, and the most individuals for that matter, consider category affiliation or social membership a matter of individual choice (Eckert, 1989). Thus, many teachers feel that students have earned their way into a particular school-based academic level and if those students so desired they could easily move through the various social groupings and/or track levels within the school environment. Eckert (1989) claimed:
Although members of the school community acknowledge that neighborhood and upbringing pre-dispose individuals to choose certain social groups, to develop certain interests, and to like or not like school, there is an implicit understanding that the school itself provides individuals with the means to make choices, and that the maturity of adolescence entails the responsibility to make the right choice regardless of childhood experience.
