Julia Aguirre (PhD, mathematics education, University of California Berkeley, 2002) is an assistant professor of education at the University of Washington Tacoma. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California Berkeley in psychology and a Master’s degree in education from the University of Chicago. She is a mathematics teacher educator committed to transforming instructional practice to better serve historically marginalized youth. Her work in culturally responsive mathematics teaching supports a new generation of teachers to work effectively in culturally and linguistically diverse schools.
Tonya Gau Bartell (PhD, mathematics education, University of Wisconsin Madison, 2005) is an assistant professor of mathematics education at Michigan State University. She is interested in promoting equity in mathematics education for all students through examining how issues of race, culture, and power intersect with issues of mathematics teaching and learning. Her research focuses on teachers’ development of mathematics pedagogy for social justice and pedagogy integrating a focus on mathematics, children’s mathematical thinking, and children’s community and cultural knowledge.
