Outtake: The Metacognition of a Reader: An Unexpected Co-Journey Towards Growth and Self-Discovery

In the fall of 2022, I was enrolled in a Social Justice course for my educational doctorate program. This course highlighted many critical topics through interviews, articles, and books. While discussing race and equity we read the book We Can’t Teach What We Don’t Know: White Teachers, Multiracial Schools by Gary Howard. I dutifully prepared myself to read and reflect on the book for the course. I gathered the necessary materials—the book, an orange highlighter, a notebook, a hot-pink flair pen (I am an elementary teacher, after all), and a cup of tea—and found a comfortable spot in my living room to embark on what I assumed would be a straightforward assignment. However, that was far from the case.
