First page of Mathematics Learning and Teaching in the Early Years

In this chapter, we examine research conducted over the past 10 years focusing on mathematics learning and teaching in the early years (birth to 8 years). We begin with a brief history of early childhood mathematics and the major theories (i.e., Piaget and Vygotsky) that inform much of the work we review. We then review research studies in young children’s mathematics organized as: infants and mathematics, preschool children’s development and knowledge, preschoolers experiences at home and at childcare centers; students’ mathematical knowledge and development; intervention studies and primary children’s knowledge, and international comparisons of children’s mathematics learning. Then we review research on teachers knowledge and practice and curriculum and instruction issues. We conclude by highlighting the major findings of the review and offer suggestions for research strands.
