The shift to e-learning in large companies has had a significant influence on employee culture, one that differs radically from how these same employees view and use technology in their everyday lives. Outside of work, the Internet has opened up a world of creativity and individuality for many; think of the success of blogs, MySpace, and YouTube. And thanks to text messaging, instant messaging, and blog comments, it has never been easier for people to communicate and collaborate. In corporations, how-ever—and particularly in the e-learning world—quite the reverse has occurred: the emphasis has been on controlling employees by force-feeding them courses and information, as well as tracking their training.
