Royal Roads University espouses a commitment to lifelong learning and the working professional, and the launch of their masters of arts in human security and peacebuilding was a masterstroke of timing. September 11th, 2001 had dramatically changed the world. The United States pressured Canada to join the attack on Iraq and, later, the missile defense shield program. The U.S. ambassador warned consequences would flow from Canadian reluctance to join U.S. military missions. Canadians have long had apprehensions about the military adventurism of their neighbour. But, because Canada would inevitably be carried along by excesses triggered by the tragedies of September 11th, citizens north of the 49th parallel were forced to again discuss what distinguishes Canada from the United States.
