Patrick cups his forehead in his palms, his elbows on the table. He breathes in and exhales a sigh, staring at the keyboard of his computer. He’s writing an application letter for an assistant professor position. Some of his peers have pursued and attained such positions in universities, while others are still working and waiting. The latter work as part-time instructors, trying to stay connected to academia. A number of his former classmates have moved away from teaching and into community and business settings. They are now working in areas that none of them could have imagined just a couple years earlier.
