The number of analytics academic programs and the use of analytics by industry have been rapidly growing over the past two decades. Industry is facing a significant amount of analytics lost opportunities due to the insufficient emphasis on developing and improving problem-solving skills in the education of analytics professionals. In this paper, we propose changes to analytics academic programs that will help improve students’ problem-solving skills. The focus of these changes will be on implementing relevant problem-solving/ diagnosis concepts taught to physicians in their training, including the use of analytics heuristics for problem solving and an analytics grand rounds course.
