This chapter documents an analysis of the National Middle Grades Research Project on Common Planning Time (Mertens, Flowers, Anfara, & Caskey, 2010), which explored middle grades teachers’ perceptions of common planning time (CPT). During this national level project, the project researchers observed 81 CPT meetings and conducted 221 individual interviews with teachers who participated in the CPT meetings. In this initial analysis, frequency counts and verbatim quotes are presented to respond to 5 research questions: (a) What are teachers’ understandings on CPT?, (b) How do teachers use their CPT?, (c) How are teachers professionally prepared to use their CPT?, (d) What are the perceived barriers to CPT?, and (e) What are the perceived benefits of CPT?
