Afterword

Since we initiated this book project in the fall 2009, the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate has moved ahead with thought and commitment in pursuit of its goal to make the EdD the degree of choice for scholarly practitioners. Through ongoing discussion and deliberation, the national CPED organization has identified a set of guiding principles and design concepts that the participating institutions have agreed upon as sound and important for those with a professional practice doctorate.

Since 2010 a federal grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education has been supporting research into the various ways CPED-affiliated institutions are reorienting and reorganizing (or sometimes initiating) doctoral programs that support and prepare educational leaders in a variety of settings and positions, including teacher education, educational administration, and community colleges. As of this writing in September 2011, 27 institutions are becoming new members of the CPED initiative, more than doubling the original membership.
