For school leaders:

For those preparing school leaders:

Catherine Marshall’s chapter invited the reader to gain a deeper understanding of how literatures and behaviors deemed appropriate by dominant structures attempted to suppress her intellect and imaginative possibilities. Marshall’s efforts to lay bare the powers that attempt to silence women’s issues are still at the heart of her work, research and activism. Although current dominant discourses seem to afford women in educational leadership positions new spaces to examine the intersections of gender and power, not enough has changed since the 1970s to dismantle the masters’ house.

In the next chapter, 40 years after Catherine Marshall took the stage, Christa Boske invites the reader to consider her lived realities as an educational leader from the next generation of women in academia. The chapter encourages the reader to consider the realities facing those who promote social justice issues in schools as well as in academia. Such experiences were internalized as symbols of hope, grounding Christa’s work as an activist early on.
