The student creation of digital documentaries, which are brief narratives that draw upon primary source images and incorporate a voice-over narration, offer unique possibilities for enhancing student outcomes from history instruction. Determining the effectiveness of digital documentaries in instructional practice will require a contextualized, multidimensional analysis and a sustained research effort using a variety of designs. This chapter provides a framework for this research, identifying key constructs and highlighting methodological challenges.
